Bus Services
One of the cheapest ways to travel to Nepal is via bus or jeep services. Regular services operate from the city of Varanasi and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and from Siliguri in West Bengal.
From Varanasi
- Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation runs a direct bus service between the cities of Varanasi and Kathmandu. This service is operated every 2 days. The journey time is 13 to 16 hours whereas the fare is around Rs.1300 (look for the latest figures). Tickets are available online at www.redbus.in
- Daily, several bus services run between Varanasi and the Nepalese border areas of Sunauli (as is called on the Indian side) or Bhairawi (as is called on the Nepalese side). The cost of per ticket is around Rs. 550 on an average and the time of journey is about 9 hrs.
After a few minutes walk from the frontier, you would reach the bus station at the Nepalese side from where you could board on a Kathmandu bound bus. The time to reach the capital city is around 9 to 12 hrs.
The daytime buses would run till about 11 am whereas the overnight bus services are available till 4 pm in the evening. - Non-AC tourist buses run between Varanasi and Pokhara/ Kathmandu with a single stop at Sunauli. The per head ticket fare is around Rs. 1333.
From Siliguri
There are multiple train and bus services from Kolkata to Siliguri. While the trains would take you to NJP (New Jalpaiguri) from where you have to book a taxi to reach Siliguri, the bus services from Kolkata reach the site directly. From Siliguri bus station, services operate to take you to the frontier town of Panitanki. One may also book a taxi from NJP to Panitanki. The journey time is around 45 minutes.
From Panitanki, you need to cross the border which happens to be a bridge above the Mechi river and reach Kakarvitta on Nepalese side. Buses run between Kakarvitta and Kathmandu with a journey time of 13 hrs. It would cost around 1300 Nepalese rupees.
