New FMG Regulations 2021

On the 18th of November, NTA had released a gazette regarding the FMGs. 

This gazette shows the new rules set by the NTA which will be applicable for foreign medical graduates. The publication of this gazette has given rise to conjectures and confusion. So, in this article, we will try to explain the new FMG regulations 2021. 

Updated New FMG Regulations 2021 Onwards 

 

The students who have completed a foreign medical course or currently pursuing the same need to have the license to practice medicine as a registered physician. The students who belong to India but pursue a medical course abroad requires to get permanent registration in order to practice medicine in India. Learn about the new FMG regulations 2021. 

The foreign medical graduates previously had to qualify for FMGE. But, now the entire We will discuss the new set of rules published by NTA.

Conditions For The permanent registration as a medical practitioner

The permanent registration will be given by NMC only if

    • The foreign medical graduates must have completed the medical graduation course within 10 years.

     

    • They have completed a course that has taken at least 54 months to complete 

     

    • They have completed an internship of at least 12 months in the same foreign medical institute. 

     

    • The medical course has been taught in English 

     

    • The students have studied the mandatory subjects specified in Schedule 1. The subjects should be taught ”along with hands-on
      training in clinical subjects including but not limited to
      Community Medicine, General Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology,
      Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Emergency or Casualty services, lab services, and their sub-specialties”. 

     

    • The foreign medical degree must be similar and equivalent to the MBBS course in India.

     

    • Students must have the registration of the medical council of the foreign country where they have attained the medical degree. They must have the license to practice medicine in the concerned foreign country as well. 

     

    • They must have undergone an additional internship in India for at least 12 months. 

     

    • The gazette says ‘’the course and internship or clinical clerkship shall commensurate with the MBBS course of India in accordance with the regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997 and subsequent amendments thereto, and shall include the subjects mentioned therein as are duly recognized by the Commission under sub-section (2) of section 61 of the Act;

     

    • Students have to qualify for the Next Exam after completing the additional internship in India. If they qualify for this test, then they can expect to get the license from NMC.

    There took place much confusion about the applicability of these rules. Students who wanted to study abroad became anxious. But, here you will learn about the 

    This new set of rules and regulations will be applicable only to those who are going to study medicine in foreign countries after 18th November 2021. Students who have already completed the medical degree from any foreign medical institute do not all under this new set of FMG rules. Students, who have pursued a medical course abroad prior to the arrival of these rules don’t have to adhere to these rules.

    So, students, after the publication of this gazette are considering the medical degree attained from a foreign country less lucrative if they want to practice medicine in India.
